The economic environment, work pressures, demands of the family, pressure for the kids to perform well at school and a seemingly ever-increasing number of people suffering from ‘mental health problems’ all seem to indicate that life is just getting harder and harder!

It may come as some surprise to know that life is not HAPPENING to you, but that you are actually INTERPRETING life in a certain way, and if you’re not coping with life well at the moment, then chances are that you are interpreting it in a way that’s not very ‘helpful’ to you!

Most people tend to believe that the ‘way the world is’ is exactly the same for everybody, but this is simply not true. The way we think and experience life is uniquely our own experience and no two people have the same experience. In this respect, everybody’s ‘world’ is totally unique.

Coping with Life – Key Ideas

If you want to be better at coping with life then there are a number of key points worth understanding:

  • The way you experience the ‘World’ is uniquely your own which is known as perceptual constructivism
  • Our ability to feel ‘in control’ of our life-path is determined by our ‘Locus of Control‘ – a core belief system
  • We ‘make sense’ of events and experiences by constantly comparing them to our ‘core beliefs & values’
  • When experiences don’t fit with our beliefs, we ‘make’ them ‘fit’ in a process known as Confirmation Bias
  • People can (and do) change their core beliefs using proven psychological tools and techniques

Coping with Life by Creating New Perspectives

The most effective and sustainable way of coping with life is by learning how to manage your thinking processes more effectively. Life REALLY IS what you make it, rather then some sort of plan designed by somebody else that you have to follow regardless of what happens along the way (although many people, of course, do believe that their lives are ‘determined’ by ‘higher beings).

Over the course of ten one-hourly sessions you will learn about and develop personal insight into how your core beliefs have either helped or hindered you over your life course and then how to use a range of proven scientific methods to bring about changes so that you can begin coping with life rather than avoiding it or seeing it as one big struggle.
