CBT Therapy for Androphobia (Fear of Men)

Understanding Androphobia
Androphobia, or an intense fear of men, can affect the way you respond to everyday situations in which men are present.
You may find yourself avoiding particular places, social situations or interactions, becoming highly alert when a man approaches you, or feeling safer when someone you trust is nearby.
Avoidance can reduce anxiety in the short term, but it may also reinforce the belief that these situations are dangerous or that you would be unable to cope with the anxiety they create. Over time, this can make the fear increasingly influential in decisions about work, relationships, travel or social activities.
Therapy can help you explore how this fear developed, understand the thoughts, expectations and avoidance patterns that keep it going, and begin developing a different response to situations that currently feel threatening.

What Can Cause a Fear of Men?
Experiences that can lead to a fear of men often stem from deeply personal and sometimes traumatic encounters that create a lasting impact on one’s psyche.
These might include instances of verbal or physical aggression, betrayal in close relationships, or societal conditioning that reinforces negative stereotypes about masculinity.
For some, a history of bullying or intimidation during formative years can plant seeds of distrust, fostering an internal narrative where men are perceived as threats rather than allies.
Additionally, witnessing or experiencing domestic violence can create an overwhelming sense of vulnerability, leading to a protective withdrawal from interactions with men altogether.
Androphobia Symptoms
Individuals grappling with androphobia may exhibit a range of common symptoms that can significantly disrupt their daily lives.
These can include:
- Intense feelings of anxiety or panic
- Avoidance behaviours
- Increased heart rate
- Trembling
- An overall sense of discomfort
- Intrusive thoughts focused on perceived threats
- Emotional distress
- A pervasive sense of unease
This fear often perpetuates a cycle of withdrawal, making it challenging to form meaningful connections or engage in activities that involve men, ultimately affecting their self-esteem and quality of life.

ABOUT PAUL
Meet Paul Lee MSc
Hello, I'm Paul and I've been working with people as a psychologist, psychotherapist and coach since 2009. I have expert knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and adopt a non-medicalised philosophy when helping people overcome mental health challenges. This means that I will frame your current difficulties as being the result of what has happened to you rather than what is wrong with you.

What to Expect from Therapy
Therapy isn't something that is simply done to you. Although your therapist can provide understanding, guidance and practical psychological strategies, meaningful change usually develops through what you discover, practice and begin to do differently in your everyday life.
At Tranceform, we see therapy as a collaborative process. We'll work together to understand the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that may be keeping the problem going, while helping you explore different ways of responding. Sometimes this involves questioning long-held assumptions, reducing avoidance or experimenting with behaviours that initially feel unfamiliar.
The aim isn't to make you dependent upon therapy or to promise a quick fix. It's to help you develop greater understanding, confidence and agency so that, over time, you become better equipped to manage difficulties for yourself.
Therapy provides the guidance. You provide the practice. We create the change together.
