CBT Therapy for Low Self-Confidence

Understanding Low Self-Confidence

Low self-confidence can influence the way you approach decisions, relationships, work and unfamiliar situations.

You may find yourself doubting your abilities, worrying about making mistakes, comparing yourself with other people, or avoiding opportunities because you are unsure whether you will cope well enough.

Avoidance and repeated self-doubt can provide short-term protection from embarrassment or disappointment, but they may also prevent you from discovering what you are capable of. Over time, this can reinforce the belief that you are less competent or less able than other people.

Therapy can help you understand how these beliefs and patterns developed, recognise the situations in which self-doubt becomes strongest, and begin developing a more balanced and flexible view of yourself and your abilities.

Confidence, Self Esteem & Social Anxiety

Many people will experience low levels of confidence at some point in our lives and this is a perfectly normal.

However, there are some people whose entire lives seem to be experienced with these feelings of low confidence, often expressed as feeling not good enough.

People with low self esteem will almost certainly suffer from Social Anxiety which is the degree to which a person feels judged by others or worries about social compliance.

In fact, there is a recognised relationship between confidence and Social Anxiety.

The more social anxiety you suffer, the lower your self confidence!

Low Self-Confidence Symptoms

Low self-confidence can manifest in a variety of ways, leaving you feeling trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and insecurity that hinders your ability to thrive in everyday life.

Common symptoms include excessive self-criticism, a fear of failure that prevents one from pursuing new opportunities, and a tendency to compare oneself unfavourably to others.

Those affected may also experience social withdrawal, second-guessing their decisions, or an inability to accept compliments, often feeling undeserving of praise.

In the workplace, low self confidence can often lead to imposter syndrome.

As these feelings take hold, they can lead to physical signs such as nervousness, avoiding eye contact, and a general sense of unease in social situations, all of which can significantly impact personal and professional relationships.

Recognising these symptoms is the first step towards taking action and reclaiming your self-worth.

ABOUT PAUL

Meet Paul Lee MSc

Hello, I'm Paul and I've been working with people as a psychologist, psychotherapist and coach since 2009. I have expert knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and adopt a non-medicalised philosophy when helping people overcome mental health challenges. This means that I will frame your current difficulties as being the result of what has happened to you rather than what is wrong with you.

What to Expect from Therapy

Therapy isn't something that is simply done to you. Although your therapist can provide understanding, guidance and practical psychological strategies, meaningful change usually develops through what you discover, practice and begin to do differently in your everyday life.

At Tranceform, we see therapy as a collaborative process. We'll work together to understand the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that may be keeping the problem going, while helping you explore different ways of responding. Sometimes this involves questioning long-held assumptions, reducing avoidance or experimenting with behaviours that initially feel unfamiliar.

The aim isn't to make you dependent upon therapy or to promise a quick fix. It's to help you develop greater understanding, confidence and agency so that, over time, you become better equipped to manage difficulties for yourself.

Therapy provides the guidance. You provide the practice. We create the change together.
