Improve Mental Health with Professional Counselling in Wolverhampton, West Midlands

Mental Health refers to our emotional, psychological and social well-being – how we feel, how we think and how we relate to other humans. Aaron Beck, founder of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy considered that most psychological problems are situated or ‘created’ within three ‘domains’ of experience:

  1. How we feel about ourselves
  2. How we feel about others
  3. How we feel about the ‘outside World’

If any or all three of these ‘cognitive domains’ contain any dysfunctional or distorted perceptions then our mental health could suffer as a result.

Interestingly, when we help clients to improve their ‘thinking’ using the Thrive Programme we spend a great deal of time helping people to manage their thinking specifically within these three areas, although we refer to them as (1) Self-esteem, (2) Social Pressure and (3) the Locus of Control.

Current Climate for Mental Health

If you believe what the media reports, we are currently experiencing a mental health crisis here in the UK with more people being prescribed anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication than at any point in our history. But why this is the case may be due to a number of factors, for example mental health problems are certainly (a bit) less stigmatised than they were 30 years ago with people feeling that they are more able to openly discuss to having mental health difficulties which may explain why we hear about it more

Mental Health has also been an issue which is highly ‘gendered’ in nature with men significantly less likely to ‘admit’ they they had any kind of mental health challenges than women, so maybe the levels of mental health have always been this way, but more men (50% of the population) are now comfortable to talk about it.

Also, you cannot rule-out the impact of the activities of the profit-driven pharmaceutical companies who create astronomical profits from the sale of drugs to the NHS. Do you think that the drug companies are working to increase sales of drugs or to see a reduction in sales (less people taking drugs) over the next 30 years? What kind of ‘outcomes’ do you think a pharmaceutical company wants for its clients – a cure after taking just ONE pill, or a degree of ‘relief’ for your symptoms but the need to take those pills for the next 30 years?

Social Impacts on Mental Health

It is our belief, here at Tranceform Psychology, that the most significant factor impacting on mental health are those which fit within the domain of ‘social pressure’. Some of the latest developments within the world of psychotherapy can be seen in this area, with the recent emergence of therapies known as ‘systemic therapies‘. These systemic therapies don’t identify poor mental health problems within the individual, but suggest that the problems exist within the ‘system’ which the person inhabits (family, friends, work). In this way, systemic therapists help mental health problems through helping the system itself to ‘change’!

Human beings do not exist isolated from their social groups or contexts and we frequently find that ‘what people think’ plays a significant part in many psychological problems. People also develop a very strong sense that they ‘must’ comply with the ‘social norms’ or ‘social expectations’ and these pressures can also impact on mental well-being.
