CBT Therapy for Mental Health Disorders

What is a Disorder?

Mental health disorders, also known as mental illnesses or psychiatric disorders, are diagnosed conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood or behaviour.

The assumption, that the behaviours linked to certain diagnostic categories, is truly representative of underlying biological pathology is highly contested, although this contention almost never finds its way into the mainstrem media!

All Mental Health Disorders Can Also Be Normal Responses

It is important to be aware that the exhibition of these behaviours does NOT necessarily mean that you are either (1) 'mentally ill', or (2) abnormal.

Each and every condition listed here can also be considered to be an understandable reaction to adverse life experiences, and this is, in fact, the position we will take if you consult us for help.

Treating Mental Health Disorders

In general terms, mental health disorders are treated in one of two fundamentally different ways, although these treatments will often be used simultaneously.

Please note that Tranceform Psychology cannot and do not provide either diagnoses or medication, only psychological interventions.

Medication & Medical Therapy

Many people find that medication that is prescribed for their mental health disorder helps to alleviate many of the symptoms associated with their problem.

It is important to be aware, however, that these medical interventions are generally NOT designed to cure the cause of the problem, but rather they are designed to minimise or manage the symptoms.

The medical and pharmaceutical sectors openly acknowledge that the true cause of mental health disorders (from the perspective of biology) are largely unknown.

There are, like all treatment options, pros and cons to using medication in the management of mental health disorders with most of the cons being the range of possible negative side-effects that drugs can trigger.

Therapy for Mental Health Disorders

Counselling involves discussing your problems with a therapist, psychologist or counsellor.

Unlike medication, the relief from symptoms is achieved through re-evaluating or re-framing how you make sense (or made sense) of some of your experiences.

Because of the link between thoughts and emotional outcomes, psychotherapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can often help to resolve the underlying causes of your distress rather than just managing or masking them.

Overall, psychotherapy treatments are not usually prone to producing negative side-effects, although some people find talking about traumatic experiences quite challenging, often leading to higher level of anxiety during the process.

ABOUT PAUL

Meet Paul Lee MSc

Hello, I'm Paul and I've been working with people as a psychologist, psychotherapist and coach since 2009. I have expert knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and adopt a non-medicalised philosophy when helping people overcome mental health challenges. This means that I will frame your current difficulties as being the result of what has happened to you rather than what is wrong with you.

What to Expect from Therapy

Therapy isn't something that is simply done to you. Although your therapist can provide understanding, guidance and practical psychological strategies, meaningful change usually develops through what you discover, practice and begin to do differently in your everyday life.

At Tranceform, we see therapy as a collaborative process. We'll work together to understand the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that may be keeping the problem going, while helping you explore different ways of responding. Sometimes this involves questioning long-held assumptions, reducing avoidance or experimenting with behaviours that initially feel unfamiliar.

The aim isn't to make you dependent upon therapy or to promise a quick fix. It's to help you develop greater understanding, confidence and agency so that, over time, you become better equipped to manage difficulties for yourself.

Therapy provides the guidance. You provide the practice. We create the change together.
