Beliefs, Rules for Living & Behaviours
Problems such as Health Anxiety, tend to be the result of ‘unhelpful’ or ‘limiting beliefs‘ that may seem difficult to solve by focusing on the symptoms alone.
A more useful model for thinking about psychological problems is shown below. In this model we can see that ‘Actions’ (what we actually do – or how we behave) are dictated by the underlying set of ‘strategies’ that are called ‘rules for living’. These rules for living, in turn, are determined by the more fundamental underlying ‘core beliefs & values’.
This model indicates that the most effective way of overcoming a wide range of problems is by changing the core underlying beliefs and values that create the rules and behaviours associated with the problem. In this way, the problem is dealt with using a cause & effect philosophy.
