Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is relatively widespread and it is estimated that 20% of people will suffer from it at one time or another.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome may be caused by either physiological (body chemistry) factors as well as psychological factors.
Before commencing any kind of psychological therapy, we recommend consulting your doctor to determine any medical problems that may be contributing to your IBS.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is certainly exacerbated by Stress and Anxiety and although medication is often prescribed for the condition, psychotherapy treatments aimed at resolving the Stress or Anxiety are often the most effective ways of alleviating the symptoms.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms
There are a number of symptoms associated with IBS and one, or several, of the symptoms may be present at any one time.
Typical symptoms are:-
- Abdominal cramps
- For women pain in the left side during sex
- Gurgling stomach
- Loss of appetite
IBS is often ‘hidden’
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that may remain “hidden” or is not spoken about or consulted for due to the often embarrassing symptoms that are associated with it.
Whilst the media is making efforts to “normalise” our view of the condition, irritable bowel syndrome may be more widespread than originally thought due to this reluctance to talk about it.

Traditional Remedies Target Symptoms Only
There are numerous “cures” and “remedies” available in the market place but the one common approach taken with all these solutions is that they target the symptoms and seem to totally ignore the cause of the problem, or at least the contributing psychological factors that may be causing it.
Whilst these remedies may provide temporary relief, the sufferer is unlikely to ever be free of the symptoms as the cause of the problem remains unresolved, often an inability to deal with Stress or Anxiety.
