Aviophobia is the Fear of Flying and is one of the most common phobias across all ages and genders.
For the majority of people who only fly by plane once a year or so, they will have learnt to live with the anxiety rather than have sought help to solve it.
For those people who develop Aviophobia and find themselves having to travel by air frequently, the problem can become much more significant and will often stand in the way of accepting a work-based promotion for example.
Aviophobia is also common amongst people who have developed control issues and find it difficult to cope when others are in control (ie. the pilot).

Whilst the feared object or situation may seem, to other people, to be ridiculous or silly, the person who suffers from the phobia knows only too well that the Anxiety that they experience is real enough.

Symptoms of Aviophobia
The symptoms of Aviophobia are very similar to other specific phobias and will often include:
- Feelings of Panic even at the thought of flying
- Inability to Relax
- An Impending Sense of Dread
- Problems Concentrating
- Being quick tempered
- Feelings of dizziness
- Difficulties in becoming motivated
- Prickly sensations like pins and needles
- Aches & Pains
- Fatigued Muscles
- Dry and Sticky mouth
- Sweating Excessively
- Migraines and Headaches
- Poor Quality of Sleep
Aviophobia Symptoms are generally automatic and uncontrollable and can seem to take over a person’s thoughts which frequently leads to extreme measures being taken to avoid the feared object or situation, what are known as “Safety” or “Avoidance” behaviours.
Unfortunately, for the sufferer, these safety behaviours have a paradoxical effect and actually reinforce the phobia rather than solve it!
Aviophobia may be the result of negative emotional experiences that can be either directly or indirectly linked to the object or situational fear.
Over time, the symptoms often become “normalised” and “accepted” as a limiting belief in that person’s life – “I’ve learnt to live with it.”
In just as many cases, Aviophobia may have become worse over time as more and more sophisticated safety behaviours and routines are developed.
The good news is that the vast majority of people who suffer from Aviophobia will find a course of Psychotherapy helps enormously.
