One of the biggest problems associated with having a fear of hospitals is that sufferers are likely to avoid essential surgical interventions if they become necessary, thus increasing the risks of health problems.
This fear became much more prevalent during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic in which large numbers of people were admitted to hospital for Covid-19 problems.
This may also have been exacerbated by the idea that many covid-19 infections were transmitted within the hospital environment leading to a reluctance to be admitted.

Whilst the feared object or situation may seem, to other people, to be ‘ridiculous’ or ‘silly’, the person who suffers from Nosocomephobia knows only too well that the Anxiety that they experience is real enough.

Nosocomephobia Symptoms are generally automatic and uncontrollable and can seem to take over a person’s thoughts which frequently leads to extreme measures being taken to avoid the feared object or situation, what are known as “Safety” or “Avoidance” behaviours.
Unfortunately, for the sufferer, these safety behaviours have a paradoxical effect and actually reinforce the phobia rather than solve it!
Nosocomephobia may be the result of negative emotional experiences that can be either directly or indirectly linked to the object or situational fear.
Over time, the symptoms often become “normalised” and “accepted” as limiting beliefs in that person’s life – “I’ve learnt to live with it.”
In just as many cases, Nosocomephobia may have become worse over time as more and more sophisticated safety behaviours and routines are developed.
