In most cases Sexual Performance Anxiety is really a “version” of “social anxiety” or “social phobia” in-as-much as we can over-worry what other people think about us, and go on to let this affect us adversely.

People suffering from Sexual Performance Anxiety often become so stressed about “how good a lover” they are that the sheer anticipation of how well they feel they must perform creates a negative effect (we call this Coue’s Law of Reversed Effort) by having the body “do the opposite” to what they actually want to happen.

These feelings that we are “not quite good enough” can be amplified during the sexual act as we generally feel at our most vulnerable and literally “exposed” during these most intimate of moments.

People suffering from sexual performance anxiety also tend to find find that they get into a negative spiral of anxiety where just the thought of having sex can lead them to start to feel anxious, often resulting in avoidance and feelings of inadequacy & low self esteem.

What can Cause me to have Sexual Performance Anxiety?

As with almost all psychological conditions there can be many different factors that result in these feelings:-

Early Character Development – During our character forming years our early learning experiences and general nurturing surroundings can impact on how we act as adults, very “macho” environments can lead young men to worry about how good they have to be.

Early negative sexual experiences – if those first sexual encounters did not go too well they can lead to an overcompensation and the development of Anxiety about sexual performance.

Could my Sexual Performance Anxiety really be Social Anxiety?

If you answer “AGREE” to more than a few of the following questions then you do have some Social Anxiety (Social Phobia) which could contribute to this problem:-

  • I feel anxious and “on the spot” around authority figures
  • I sometimes blush or stutter when talking to people
  • I avoid being the centre of attention
  • Making a fool of myself, or people laughing at me are amongst my worst fears
  • Parties and social events intimidate me and I will often avoid them
  • I hate the feeling of being criticized so I work really hard at being good and getting things right
  • I find it hard to look people in the eye whilst talking to them
  • I often feel panicky when I am around people
  • I find meeting new people hard
  • I always get nervous before any sort of test
