Post Traumatic Growth – PTG
Post Traumatic Growth through Resilience
There is an underlying assumption that experiencing any kind of traumatic event must somehow result in either negative outcomes or, for some, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Although mostly associated with combat (for example those fighting in the Vietnam war) PTSD has become synonymous with traumatic events across a wide spectrum of scenarios, including childhood sexual abuse, road traffic accidents, witnessing trauma and so on.
However, research shows that in fact the majority of people (around 80%) experiencing traumatic experiences do not suffer any long term consequences and generally adapt to the experience going forward in life.
Positive Effects of Trauma
Perhaps the most well known example of Post Traumatic Growth is highlighted by what has now become known as the ‘Stockdale Paradox‘.
Commander James Stockdale was the most senior Naval officer to have been captured during the Vietnam conflict and was held prisoner for 7 years, during which time he endured various forms of torture.
Remarkably, however, not only did he NOT suffer any negative consequences, but on the contrary, he described his experience as ‘life-affirming’ and said that he would not change what happened to him if he could.
It was well known among the rank and file of military people who were familiar with Stockdale that he had a high level of resilience to challenges long before his Vietnam experience, and research does suggest that resilience, the ability to maintain a perspective on negative events and ‘move on’, is a key determinant in surviving trauma.
Resilience Can Be Learnt
Not everybody has a high level of resilience and there are numerous early developmental factors which can limit it, including the frequency and severity of past-traumatic experiences.
The good news, however, is that resilience is a skill that can be learnt in a predictable and systematic way, mainly through the ability to manage thoughts and ‘appraisals’ of situations through the modification of underlying beliefs and value systems.
This is exactly what we endeavour to help clients do when following our Tranceformental CBT programme.
Transform Your Thinking & Create Post Traumatic Growth
If you’re committed to overcoming your trauma problems then we highly recommend following either our Advanced Tranceformental CBT programme with Paul, or Joan.
Tranceformental CBT is available as Online Therapy if required
The Tranceformental programme is a highly successful & pragmatic psychological training course, run over 10 sessions, that will teach you everything you need to know to understand your problem, identify how unhelpful thinking and limiting beliefs might be reinforcing the issue, and then show you how to make any changes to your unhelpful thinking styles or maladaptive safety behaviours that you may have developed as part of your coping strategies.
Our Tranceformental CBT programme is an evidence-based, research supported approach used by mental health practitioners around the World.
Initial Consultations to Discuss Post Traumatic Growth
We offer all prospective clients an initial consultation to discuss PTG prior to commencing any treatment plans.
The consultation is free and last around 50 minutes.
During this consultation we will discuss the various options that are available to you and make a considered recommendation based on your individual personal circumstances.
Initial consultations are also available as part of our online therapy service.
At TranceForm Psychology we recognise the importance of the therapeutic relationship in helping people to bring about effective change, so its important to be able to ‘meet’ to discuss our change programmes BEFORE proceeding.
Our policy is to help people make a fully balanced & considered decision about undertaking work with us, including both the financial and personal implications.
Do You Have a 'Mental Illness'?
Why not try out these mental health quizzes to see if you have the symptoms of Depression or Anxiety.
These two tests are used throughout the mental health profession as indicators of mental illness.
NOTE: These quizzes do NOT diagnose mental illness, only that you have associated symptoms.
For most mental health problems we recommend following our 10 session Tranceformental CBT Programme (an advanced version of empirically established cognitive behavioural therapy) to overcome a wide range of mental health and behavioural problems.
CBT is a proven, evidence-based form of mental health counselling for developing a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of your problem, but also for learning new coping skills and strategies for sustainable change over your life.
The full course costs £795 which you can pay for on our fees page.
Tranceformental CBT is available On-line as well as a one-to-one format in the clinic.
