What is Friggatriskaidekaphobia?

Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the Fear of Friday 13th and is a phobia based on the superstitious idea that bad things happen on Friday 13th.

There are various theories as to how this day became the subject of such a superstition with the most common one being that it is related to the crucifixion of the christian symbol Jesus.

There is no scientific evidence that any particular day is more ‘unlucky’ than any other so this phobia is more likely to be based on learned behaviours from other family members.

Fear of Friday 13th is traditionally associated with religious ideology and so may be the result of negative emotion experiences from earlier developmental years.

All phobias, regardless of what the feared object or circumstances are, produce feelings of Anxiety and Stress for the sufferer, and Friggatriskaidekaphobia is no different in this sense.

Whilst the feared object or situation may seem, to other people, to be ‘ridiculous’ or ‘silly’, the person who suffers from Friggatriskaidekaphobia knows only too well that the Anxiety that they experience is real enough.

The symptoms of Friggatriskaidekaphobia are very similar to other specific phobias and will often include:

Friggatriskaidekaphobia may be the result of negative emotional experiences that can be either directly or indirectly linked to the object or situational fear.

Over time, the symptoms often become “normalised” and “accepted” as limiting beliefs in that person’s life – “I’ve learnt to live with it.”

In just as many cases, Friggatriskaidekaphobia may have become worse over time as more and more sophisticated safety behaviours and routines are developed.
