Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is characterised by chronic widespread pain and a heightened pain response to pressure.

Other symptoms often include feeling tired to such a degree that normal activities may be affected, for example sleep problems.

Some people also report restless leg syndrome, bowel or bladder problems, numbness and tingling, and sensitivity to noise, lights or temperature.

Fibromyalgia is frequently associated with depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder.

The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown; however, it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors with half the risk attributed to each.

Environmental factors may include psychological stress, trauma, and certain infections.

The pain appears to result from processes in the central nervous system and the condition is referred to as a “central sensitization syndrome”.

Diagnosis involves first ruling out other potential causes and verifying that a set number of symptoms are present and so we always recommend that sufferers consult their GP before seeking any kind of psychological support.

Recommendations for the treatment of fibromyalgia often include getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet.

Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2–8% of the population.

Females are affected about twice as often as males.

There is controversy about the classification, diagnosis, and treatment of fibromyalgia whereby some feel the diagnosis of fibromyalgia may negatively affect a person, other research finds it to be beneficial.

Therapy & Counselling for Fibromyalgia

We offer a number of different types of therapy and counselling for Fibromyalgia and stress-related problems.

Choosing the most suitable therapy depends on a number of different considerations including factors such as:

  • How long you have had the problem.
  • Your personal preferences.
  • How your problem is affecting you today.

You can read more about the different types of therapy for anxiety on the following links:

Although all therapies use slightly different approaches, the one thing they all have in common is the relationship that is formed between the client and therapist.

Furthermore, research also suggests that therapy relationship may be the most important factor in achieving a good therapy outcome.
