Suitability for Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis
Not everybody benefits from a course of Hypnotherapy and the reasons for this are multi-faceted. In fact, not everybody gets a benefit for therapy of any kind, so Hypnotherapy is in no way unique in this respect.
Sorry, No Magic Here!
Many people actively seek-out Hypnotherapy as an alternative to other forms of therapy and in a great many cases this is because people are frequently looking for some sort of ‘magic bullet’ that will solve their problem ‘for them’. Unfortunately for those people however, Hypnotherapy is unable to deliver because it is in no way magical and cannot change a persons life without them being 100% engaged in the process themselves!
So Who Is Suitable?
In general terms, people who have a high need to ‘be in control’ will find Hypnotherapy difficult and this is because the state of Hypnosis is one in which a person actively ‘lets go’ of control and allows themselves to relax to a deep level during which they can be more in touch with their ‘inner’ self and feelings.
Hypnosis is a ‘permissive’ state that cannot be ‘imposed’ by the Hypnotherapist and is only suitable, therefore, for people willing and able to trust in the therapist.
What About Age?
As Hypnosis is a state that anybody can experience there are generally no age barriers. However, there are a few practical considerations to take into account when Hypnosis is being used therapeutically.
Firstly at Tranceform we only offer Hypnotherapy for people aged 18 or over. We have seen and helped people using Hypnotherapy up to the age of 80 years old but any kind of therapy will often involve thinking and talking about difficult emotional experiences and so it is not always a good idea to opt for life-changing therapy in your most senior and fragile years.
What Sort of Problems are not Suitable for Hypnotherapy?
In principle most problems can be helped through Hypnotherapy, however, there are a few issues that don’t seem to respond well due, in the main, to the types of thinking associated with those problems.
We consider the following problems UNSUITABLE for Hypnotherapy work:
- Any Psychosis related issues
- Addictive Behaviours related to the use of Narcotics (Cocaine, Heroin etc.
- Bulimia & Anorexia Nervosa
