Which is the Right Weight Loss Programme for Me?

This “LOC” test is a measure of “how much control you believe you have over your life” and has been shown to be extremely important when it comes to a persons ability to cope with life events and circumstances.
An External Locus of Control
People who have an “External Locus of Control” tend to see life as “something that HAPPENS to them” over which they are unable to exert any influence.
People demonstrating an external LOC will typically have strong beliefs in things like “Luck” or “Fate” and may also have strong Religious Beliefs – all of these beliefs are centred around the idea that a persons life events are controlled by these factors.
These types of beliefs can inhibit a person taking positive actions.
From a Weight Loss Perspective these external beliefs might be something like:
- I’m addicted to chocolate
- I cannot stop myself eating
- I have a low metabolism
- I cannot lose weight
An Internal Locus of Control
People who have, or develop, an “Internal Locus of Control” tend to see life as “What You Make It” and take full responsibility for how their life “plays out.”
A person with an internal LOC sees themselves as the key to their successes and tend not to believe that their lives are controlled by all of these outside factors.
These types of beliefs “empower” people to take responsibility and lead to the ability to bring about changes that they desire.
When it comes to Weight Loss, an internal LOC leads to beliefs such as:
- I enjoy chocolate in sensible amounts
- I can easily eat the right quantities and types of foods
- I can succeed if I put in the effort
- I can cope with stress without turning to food
