Understanding Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can involve a sudden increase in fear accompanied by strong physical sensations such as a racing heart, breathlessness, dizziness, shaking or feelings of unreality. Because these sensations can feel intense and unexpected, you may begin to worry about what they mean or whether another attack could happen.

You might find yourself monitoring your body closely, avoiding particular places or situations, carrying things that make you feel safer, or arranging your life so that help is always nearby. These safety behaviours can be understandable, but they may also reinforce the belief that the sensations themselves are dangerous and make you increasingly alert to any sign that another attack could be starting.

Therapy can help you understand how physical sensations, fearful interpretations and avoidance can interact to create and maintain panic, and help you develop a different response to the sensations when they occur.

What May Have Caused Your Panic Attacks?

You may develop panic-related difficulties when your nervous system has learned to stay ready for danger over a long period.

Growing up with uncertainty, criticism, conflict, limited emotional support or pressure to appear strong can make it harder to recognise and settle feelings of fear.

Later experiences such as bullying, relationship difficulties, financial strain, work demands, health worries, social isolation or major changes may add to this load.

You may also have learned to place high demands on yourself, hide distress from others or feel responsible for keeping everything under control.

When your emotional and physical resources become stretched, ordinary sensations or situations can begin to feel threatening, particularly if you have not had opportunities to develop confidence, safety and ways of expressing your needs.

These influences do not mean panic is inevitable, and they do not define you. They can, however, help explain why your reactions may have developed and provide useful starting points for understanding yourself with greater compassion.
