CBT Therapy for Stress

Understanding Stress
Stress can begin to build when the demands placed on you feel greater than the time, energy or resources you have available to manage them.
You may find yourself constantly thinking ahead, struggling to switch off, becoming more irritable, sleeping poorly, or feeling as though there is always something else that needs your attention.
You might respond by working harder, postponing rest, avoiding difficult decisions or trying to keep everything under control. These strategies can sometimes help in the short term, but they may also leave you with fewer opportunities to recover and make the sense of pressure increasingly difficult to escape.
Therapy can help you understand the pressures contributing to your stress, recognise the habits and expectations that may be keeping it going, and develop more workable ways of responding to demands, uncertainty and responsibility.

Long Term Effects of Stress
Un-managed stress can have a direct effect on well-being as well as physical health.
The study of stress and how it effects our bodies is known as psychoneuroimmunology or "PNI".
Biological illnesses in which stress can be cited as a significant factor include:
- Diabetes.
- Hair loss.
- Heart disease.
- Hyperthyroidism.
- Obesity.
- Sexual problems.
- Tooth and gum disease.
- Gastric ulcers.
Even if your stress is caused by one of these problems, there are still things that you can do to manage it more effectively.
Symptoms of Stress
Stress can manifest in various ways, and it's essential to recognise the signs to address them effectively.
Common physical symptoms include fatigue, digestive issues, rapid heartbeat, and tension in the body.
Cognitive symptoms often involve difficulty making decisions, persistent worry, or a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Emotionally, individuals may experience mood swings, feelings of isolation, or an increased sense of vulnerability.
Behavioural changes can also surface, such as changes in appetite, withdrawal from social interactions, or engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Understanding these symptoms is crucial to seeking appropriate support and managing stress proactively.

ABOUT PAUL
Meet Paul Lee MSc
Hello, I'm Paul and I've been working with people as a psychologist, psychotherapist and coach since 2009. I have expert knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and adopt a non-medicalised philosophy when helping people overcome mental health challenges. This means that I will frame your current difficulties as being the result of what has happened to you rather than what is wrong with you.

What to Expect from Therapy
Therapy isn't something that is simply done to you. Although your therapist can provide understanding, guidance and practical psychological strategies, meaningful change usually develops through what you discover, practice and begin to do differently in your everyday life.
At Tranceform, we see therapy as a collaborative process. We'll work together to understand the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that may be keeping the problem going, while helping you explore different ways of responding. Sometimes this involves questioning long-held assumptions, reducing avoidance or experimenting with behaviours that initially feel unfamiliar.
The aim isn't to make you dependent upon therapy or to promise a quick fix. It's to help you develop greater understanding, confidence and agency so that, over time, you become better equipped to manage difficulties for yourself.
Therapy provides the guidance. You provide the practice. We create the change together.
